San Cristobal de las Casas 2008

Here's a new spin on a classic. Turn up the Volume!

Here are a few shots of the HOG's current tribal dress.  In the center of this pic. directly below, you will see the St. Christoper medal my sister sent my way.  I acknowledge it's spirit every time I slip on my riding boots.

There is also a dreamcatcher, and a strap of leather in spirit of the Zapatista's...

I also had some skunk urine in a vial, purchased at the Maya Medicine Development Center, (an interesting place), here in San Cristobal. It is used to cure something or another. I thought it was a good idea at the time to maybe add it to the HOG's tribal dress, but cant for the life of me remember why. Consequently I left it with a rastafaran,  (from Italy!), who thought it was pretty kool...

Peace.

  3. Ha! Thats the conclusion I came to... what the heck was I thinking buying a vial of skunk urine on a string?
Big snow in Milwaukee 'eh? I actually really liked those blizzards that rolled through Wisconsin. Enjoy! Drive safe.
I have put almost 3000 miles on the scoot since leaving Denver. Just turned 25k on the odometer. It's good to know that if all goes as planned and I am back at the US / Mexico border in April, with about 50k on her, it will still be under warranty. The 2 year unlimited mile warranty was the clincher in buying the bike. By the time I ride through Canada and Alaska next year, she will have close to 60 or 70k on her, and will still have 6mths or so left on the warranty.
But thats getting ahead of myself. Because I woke up with a sense of urgency to get back on the road this morning, I packed up and headed for the Guatemala border. Unfortunately it was closed. The officer told me that there had been a gunfight nearby yesterday. Reportedly over cow grazing rights... Those crazy Guatemalans! He said to try agin in the morning, So turned around and am now about 40 miles away in a town called Comitan. Will give it another shot in the am.
The roads have been fine with the exception of a 125 mile stretch between Tampico and Tuxpan, which is probably still under construction. Their not like the roads in the USA, but they are ok. You just have to pay attention to the topes and the rules of the road,: Rule #1: there are no rules! There are cows, chickens, horses, burros, wild dogs, children, and hand drawn carts being pulled by our mexican brothers, everywhere. From what others tell me, it's much faster, and the road in much better condition, if you stay on the PanAmerican Highway. But that just doesnt sound like any fun to me... On the secondary roads I travel, 200-300 miles is a full day. In the States, you could ride that in the morning.
The border closing is an example of how things roll here. ya just never know what your going to run into. Making it to South America will require quite a bit of luck. I want to be back at the US / Mexico border by April or May. Will just roll with it and see what happens.
    Take care bro. Peace.

U DROP THAT BELT U WILL BE PUSHING..DON'T WANT TO PUT ANY FEAR IN YOU , JUST WANT TO KEEP U AWARE AS YOU TRAVEL AND THE CONDITIONS YOU TRAVEL IN.. WOULD HAVE LOVED TO MAKE THAT TRIP WITH YOU SIDE BY SIDE. THEN AGAIN IT WOULD HAVE TAKEN LONGER.. I AM ATRACTED TO EVERYTHING , AND WANT TO CHECK IT OUT...WHERE MY LITTLE ONE LIVES , THEY HAVE A VERY LARGE AMISH COMMUNITY. AND I AM ATRACTED TO THE WAY THEY LIVE , AND FIND MYSELF ALWAYS STOPING AND TALKING TO THEM. HAVE BEEN TO A FEW OF THEIR HOMES AND BUSINESS AND WOW IT IS SO DIFFERENT TO THE WAY I LIVE. WHERE U R , I ONLY SEE ON TV , AND WOULD LOVE TO BE A PART OF IT , TO SEE THE WAY PEOPLE LIVE. YEH 2 TO 3 HUNDRED MILES IN A DAY ON A SCOOTER , IS A GOOD DAY. 5. Hope I signed in right.... found your blog today, I spend lots of time reading ADV ride reports, nice to see that you're on a Harley. Not that I'm against ADV bikes, but with my short legs I don't see how I could ever ride one!
Just a couple of suggestions, hopefully you have duplicate id's and driver's licenses, just in case...yup, fake wallet, and most of all, follow your gut instincts.
OH, and see if the H-D dealer has an emergency belt and link, just in cause your belt breaks. Belt version of a chain and master link.
Sure wish I could go with you, I got a bike (Deuce) and the gear, but not the $$$$! :o(
Enjoy your trip, I'm loving the pics and comments. Keep posting!
    Mary
